What is the next big thing for Communications Service Providers (CSPs)? Several exciting concepts and disruptive ideas – in many cases, Over-The-Top (OTT) player relevant rather than CSP specific – would compete for this coveted title. Amongst them, a couple of industry buzzwords have already captured the public’s imagination and led to tangible product offerings.
The first one is ‘big data’, typically used to describe extremely large sets of data records that would be difficult and cost-prohibitive to store and process with traditional methods. For years, CSPs have collected network, service, handset/device and customer related data. Due to cost and complexity, this information was typically incomplete, used in departmental silos and discarded after a short period of time. The advent of big data facilitates a new paradigm.

On January 20, Vodafone Netherlands and MYCOM OSI will present in a telecoms.com webinar entitled ‘Case Study: How Vodafone Netherlands reduced Corporate/VIP Customer Churn to nearly zero with Proactive Service Management’.
Many Tier-1 Communications Service Providers have moved or consider moving from reactive network-centric to proactive service-focused operations. This is often described as a ‘Network Operations Center to Service Operations Center’ or ‘NOC to SOC’ change. For example, as part of its efforts to minimize high-commercial-value customer churn, Vodafone Netherlands implemented within its Service Management Center (SMC) a Proactive Service Management capability to predict, analyze and manage the impact of network resource changes on key customers.

In recent discussions with colleagues, the topic of convergence came up. Years ago, Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) would have dominated such discussions as the prospect of seamless connectivity across wireless and wireline (i.e. convergent) networks excited experts and enthusiasts alike. Today, a discussion around convergence is typically about the telecoms world getting closer to the IT world, for example in the context of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).

During November, MYCOM OSI had the opportunity to participate in a number of events in the Middle East, North America, Africa and Europe. Although these events varied in scope, from general telecoms interest to specific topics such as NFV (Network Functions Virtualization), they all shared some key messages from Communications Service Providers (CSPs). In terms of requirements for Service Assurance solutions in particular, the messages from CSPs converged to three main themes: flexibility, scalability, and reliability.
