Three UK's Core Network Transformation Requires New Approach to Assurance

Back in 2014 the regulatory winds were favorable in European telecoms with consolidation in both the German and Austrian markets taking the number of mobile network operators from four to three. "Market repair" was the buzzword of the day and operators were keen to see if they could achieve similar consolidation in other countries. In the UK, there were four MNOs: EE (itself a merger of Orange and T-Mobile's UK arms), O2 (part of the Telefonica Group, Vodafone and Three UK (part of Asian conglomerate CK Hutchison). With EE being snapped up by BT, Three made an audacious offer for O2 that would have created the largest mobile operator in the UK with over 40% share of mobile subscribers and a strong portfolio of spectrum. However, after a year of deliberations, in May 2016 the deal was blocked by the EU commission on competition grounds, leaving Three UK in a quandary.

Overcoming OSS barriers for future digital networks

Current Operation Support Systems need to quickly transform and evolve so that they can support and enable the future digital networks.

The future digital networks will be associated with high-volume, high-speed data transfers, on-demand services based on customer preference and dynamic orchestration of the resources. These networks will be a multi-layer composite of NFV/SDN, IoT and 5G, and will continue to meet the demands of customers over the next 8-10 years. To make digital business successful, OSS will need to quickly evolve and start supporting the expected dynamicity, speed and scale of the future digital networks. To achieve this, new OSS technologies and functionalities will be incorporated into the current OSS systems in incremental steps.

Challenges in building OSS for future digital networks

Future digital networks will be associated with high speed communication, on-demand services and dynamic network orchestration. Current Operation Support Systems (OSS) will struggle in the future digital ecosystem.

The future digital networks are being designed to make digital business a success for the communication service providers and to offer competitive, advanced digital services to their customers. The networks of the future will be predominantly cloud based (virtualized), managing higher volumes of data at higher speeds and ensuring reliable connections between sensored devices. This means that new management techniques have to be incorporated for managing the networks, so that they deliver the expected dynamicity, speed and scale. This will require build-up of the capabilities of the underlying Operation Support System, especially reliability and real-time orchestration.
